During her 46 years in education, Sue taught special education, reading, English, drama, driver education, and spent time as an adjunct professor for Grand Valley State University at Traverse City’s University Center. She also served as an elementary principal in Dryden, Michigan and Traverse City and was the Early Childhood Supervisor for TBAISD (now Northwest Education Services) from 2001-2005. Sue resides in Traverse City and enjoys substitute “principal-ing” for TCAPS, reading to students, traveling the world, junk shopping, and spending time with her son and her two granddaughters.

Kevin Gay, Treasurer

Kevin Gay was a lifelong Midland resident and community member until his retirement as Partner and CFO from Three Rivers Corporation in 2015 when he and his wife Sharron relocated to Northern Michigan. While in Midland, Kevin served on many boards and councils as either treasurer or president. These included the Midland Area Community Foundation, the Arnold Center, the Midland County Chamber of Commerce, and the Midland County Housing Commission.

Kevin and Sharron’s three adult sons include an accountant, a high school science teacher, and a welding engineer. Kevin’s commitment to education and career development led him to serve on the North Ed Foundation Board starting in 2023. In Kevin’s downtime, you can find him working in the woodshop, tending the garden and orchard, catching a few fish, spending time with his grandkids, or teeing off on the course.

Kris Wendland, Secretary

Kris Wendland earned her Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in Special Education for students with Emotional Impairments. She began her teaching career in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and earned a Master’s Degree in Learning Disabilities from Central Michigan University. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling and became a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Abigail Bosco, Director

Abigail Bosco is an experienced attorney with a strong background in litigation. A native of Scottsdale, Arizona, Ms. Bosco has deep family ties (Fourth Generation) to Michigan and a special connection to the Traverse City area, which she now calls home. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School in May 2018. She is licensed to practice law in both Michigan and Arizona.

While still in law school, Abigail worked as a clerk at the Michigan Court of Appeals, where she researched and prepared briefs for the Hon. Judge Christopher Murray. After graduating law school, she joined the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office working as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney. Currently a member of the team at Alward Fisher, Ms. Bosco practices in the areas of business banking, evictions and foreclosures, business development, real estate, criminal law and general civil litigation.

Ms. Bosco enjoys giving back to the surrounding community, currently serving on the Board of Governors and Officers for the Grand Traverse-Leelanau-Antrim Bar Association. In her free time, she enjoys running, fishing, archery, hunting, boating, playing euchre, and spending time with her black Labrador, Rio.

Kathleen Guy, Director

Coming from a family of teachers and educational administrators, Kathleen Guy has always held a deep belief in the value of education. It’s part of her DNA. The product of a community college experience that had a profound influence on her chosen life’s work, she held various positions in higher education advancement for more than 30 years while also co-founding the Eaton Cummings Group. When Kathleen began consulting with community colleges and other nonprofits, the concept of creating supplemental revenue streams through philanthropy was still fairly new. Even today, she finds that many organizations still assume they must constrain their vision based on the limitations of available public or fee-for-service funding.

In her downtime, Kathleen loves spending time with her four young grandchildren, enjoying every season in the outdoors snowshoeing, hiking, kayaking and pontooning; volunteering on several nonprofit boards in her community; traveling to places like Africa (where she recently participated in a Rotary service project to build a secondary school), listening to music and reading. She is also working on two books about the future of community colleges and philanthropy. On her best weeks, she also enjoys reading the Sunday New York Times cover to cover without interruptions over a cup of really good coffee.

Chet Janik, Director

During his 42-year career, Chet Janik served as Director of Student and Campus Services, Director of Community Outreach, and Assistant to two Presidents at Northwestern Michigan College, in addition to serving as Superintendent of Buckley Community Schools, Superintendent of the Charlevoix Public Schools, and 10 years as the Leelanau County Administrator and Chief Executive Officer. He is currently a consultant with the Michigan Leadership Institute.

Throughout his career, Mr. Janik has been active in professional and service organizations. He served as the Government Relations and Special Projects Coordinator for Northwest Education Services (then-Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District), assisting numerous public and private school districts, nonprofits and local governments with strategic planning, fundraising leadership and board governance. Chet's community service includes (but is not limited to) President of the Suttons Bay Rotary Club, United Way Campaign Leader, Lions Club of Charlevoix, American Red Cross and Grand Traverse Chamber of Commerce, where he served as Director of the Leadership Program.

He earned his Bachelor’s and Master's degrees from Central Michigan University and post-master's credits in administrative leadership from the University of Nebraska. Chet was born in Krakow, Poland, and has dual citizenship. He has been married to Jane for 40 years and they have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

After devoting several years to mothering four young children, Karmin returned to education in 2012 to teach one more year before accepting a position as school counselor at Kalkaska High School in 2013. Since 2019, Karmin has served as a school counselor at Northwest Education Services Career Tech. She resides with her husband and children in Williamsburg.

Maggie Johnson, Administrative Volunteer

Maggie Johnson spent decades volunteering and working for nonprofits before earning her Associate Degree in General Studies from Northwestern Michigan College as a working, newly-single mother. Whenever she gets the opportunity, Maggie gratefully shares about how her support team and generous scholarship donors changed her family’s future during her time as an NMC student. After completing her degree, Maggie was hired at Northwest Education Services (North Ed) Career Tech as the executive assistant. She credits all of her professional success to being a Career Tech graduate herself. Maggie is honored to support the efforts of the North Ed Foundation and truly believes in the work being done. When Maggie isn’t in her office, you can find her behind a sewing machine, in the garden or spending time with her chickens.
