Community

We would not be able to accomplish the work we do without community and parent involvement.  Having the support of local businesses helps facilitate many of the activities and projects we do in and outside the classroom and brings together like minded individuals who are passionate about good food and education.  We are grateful to parent volunteers who provide the man power to run events and promote the longevity of the Farm to School program.

We host Virtual Family Cooking Classes during the year that feature local chefs, often times parents of students that attend our schools!

Each fall, when school is back in session, we partner with MSU-E of Leelanau County to host pop-up farmers markets at our partnered schools. These markets are designed to give students the experience of a farmers market and the opportunity to meet farmers and purchase local produce.

We are always looking for more vendors to be a part of our school markets! You do not need to be a large established farm to participate, you could be a community member with an affinity for growing fresh food! If you're interested in vending at one of our school markets, please email Brooke (bjuday@northwested.org).

This map shows the locations of the incredible vendors who attended our markets in Fall of 2023.

In addition to students learning to grow food in their school gardens, we also work to take students to local farms. This offers them the opportunity to learn different practices for growing food and envision what food production looks like on a larger scale.

We are always looking for volunteers!
